ABA is a science dedicated to the understanding and improvement of human behavior. ABA focuses on skill acquisition that teaches new functionally related alternative behaviors to replace challenging behaviors.
Applied
Ongoing and thorough assessments are conducted to isolate skills that are socially significant, functional, and important to your child and your family. We assess every 6 months to check our overall progress.
Behavior
We make sure to target and address behavior(s) important to your child’s life. A behavior is any observable and measurable action or response that someone performs. Behaviors are not always negative or a problem, a behavior can be positive as well. Examples include sleeping, walking, standing, blinking our eyes, sharing a toy, eating food, etc.
Analysis
Data is gathered and frequently analyzed to measure progress and determine treatment recommendations. Our BCBA’s present caregivers with reports that include graphs, goals, a behavior intervention plan (BIP), and skill acquisition targets.
* Therapy in the Home Setting *
ABA therapy in the home setting is very family friendly, and naturalistic. Upon arrival, DART’s therapists briefly check in with caregivers to see how the day, week, and/or weekend went. Gathering this information is significant for many reasons, such as data collection purposes and best ways to run the therapy session. We then, typically, make a schedule (i.e.; visual, hand-written, typed) with your kiddo. We add fun activities, and may sneak in some non-preferred activities (that are still fun!), and then we teach by using ABA strategies such as offering choices, providing positive reinforcement, and prompting methods. We always focus on language, play, and social skills in the home. Having fun while teaching is the most important aspect!! Usually, sessions are extremely active. Caregivers, at times, like to observe and be involved. Otherwise, caregivers let us do our thing while we check-in every so often. Please contact us if you have additional questions about “what therapy looks like in your home.”
